Ahrefs vs Semrush vs Google Search Console: Which Do You Actually Need?

Let me tell you what I used to do every month as a solo indie dev. Open my bank statement. See $129 for Ahrefs sitting there next to my Vercel bill, my Supabase bill, and my domain renewals. Every single month I asked myself the same question. Am I actually using this tool, or am I paying for peace of mind?

I am not anti-Ahrefs. I am not anti-Semrush. These are both legitimately great tools built by smart people, and if you are running an SEO agency or doing serious competitive research, they are worth every rupee. But for the vast majority of solo bloggers, side-project builders, and small site owners, the honest answer is that you are paying $100 to $140 a month for tools where you use maybe 10% of the features.

That is what I want to work through in this post. Not to trash Ahrefs or Semrush. But to help you figure out what you actually need based on where you are, what you are building, and how big your budget is.

The Honest Truth About SEO Tool Spending

Most solo bloggers I know spend more on SEO tools than they make from SEO. That is a mathematical problem. That is before hosting, domains, email, and every other indie dev bill.

The reason this happens is not that people are silly. It is that SEO Twitter treats these tools like mandatory equipment. You read 5 threads a day saying "I could not grow without Ahrefs" and you assume you need it too. But those threads usually come from SEO consultants and agencies, not from solo bloggers.

The tools you read about every day on Twitter are optimized for people who do SEO as a full-time job. If that is you, skip straight to section 8 and pick the right stack. If you are a blogger, a side-project builder, or someone who just wants to rank their own products, keep reading. The answer is probably simpler than you think.

What Google Search Console Gives You for Free

Google Search Console is the single most underrated tool in SEO. It is free, it comes straight from Google, and the data quality is the best you can get because nothing is estimated or scraped. It is the actual data the search engine used to rank your pages.

Here is what GSC does really well. You can see every keyword your site ranks for, the average position, impressions, clicks, and CTR. You can see which pages are indexed and which are not. You can submit sitemaps, request indexing, and see exactly which queries drive traffic to each page. But GSC has three big gaps that make it frustrating for serious SEO work.

Where GSC Falls Short

First, it does not show backlinks well. The Links report is basic compared to Ahrefs or Semrush. You get a list of top linking sites and top linked pages, but no context about the authority of those links, when they were added, or whether they are dofollow or nofollow.

Second, it cannot show you competitor data. GSC only shows you your own site. If you want to see what keywords your competitors rank for, what backlinks they have, or what content they publish, GSC is useless.

Third, and this is the one that bothered me most, GSC does not tell you what to do next. You stare at a keyword sitting at position 8 with 2,000 monthly impressions and 1.1% CTR, and you think "something should be done here," but GSC will never tell you what. You have to figure out the next step yourself. That gap is exactly what I was hoping Ahrefs would fill when I first subscribed.

What Ahrefs Does Best

Ahrefs is the gold standard for backlink analysis. Their crawler is probably the biggest in the industry aside from Google itself, and their link index is deep enough that you can run serious competitive research from it without hitting obvious gaps.

Their backlink checker is world-class. You can paste in any URL and see the entire link profile, including new and lost links over time, anchor text distribution, and the authority score of each linking domain. For anyone building a backlink strategy or auditing a client site, this alone is worth the subscription.

Their keyword explorer gives you search volume, keyword difficulty, parent topic, and SERP history for almost any query. The data is scraped rather than pulled straight from Google, but it is updated frequently and the volume estimates are more accurate than most free alternatives.

Their content gap tool is fantastic if you are planning new content. You plug in 3 to 5 competitor domains, and it shows you every keyword they rank for that you do not. For content strategy this is a starting point you cannot easily replicate with GSC data alone.

Pricing starts around $129 per month for the Lite plan, which limits you to a handful of tracked projects and a set number of reports per day. For serious users the Standard plan at around $249 per month is where the tool really shines.

Who Should Pay for Ahrefs

If you are doing any of these things on a regular basis, Ahrefs genuinely pays for itself. Deep backlink audits for clients. Content gap analysis for a fast-growing site. Competitive keyword research at scale. Running an SEO agency where multiple people need the same data.

If you are not doing these things, you are probably paying for shelfware.

What Semrush Does Best

Semrush is the closest alternative to Ahrefs, but they approach the problem from a different angle. Semrush is best thought of as an all-in-one marketing platform rather than a pure SEO tool.

The PPC and advertising data is the best I have seen outside of Google Ads itself. Semrush shows you ad copy, landing pages, ad positions, and estimated ad spend for any competitor domain. If you run paid campaigns alongside SEO, this is genuinely valuable data that Ahrefs cannot touch.

Their site audit is more thorough than Ahrefs' and catches more technical issues. It is the tool I would pick if I was doing technical SEO for a large ecommerce site where a missed hreflang error or an orphaned page could cost real money.

Their content marketing toolkit includes a topic research tool, a content template generator based on top-ranking pages, and a brand monitoring feature. The whole suite pushes Semrush closer to a HubSpot-style marketing platform than a pure SEO tool.

Pricing is similar to Ahrefs. The Pro plan starts around $139 per month, and most small teams end up on the Guru plan at around $249 per month once they hit the limits.

Who Should Pay for Semrush

Semrush is the right choice if you are doing paid and organic together, running technical audits on big sites, or need broader marketing insights like ad intelligence and brand monitoring. It is less of a pure backlink tool than Ahrefs but more useful if your work spans marketing channels.

The Comparison Table

Here is a side-by-side look at the features that matter most, and where each tool stands. The point of this table is not to rank the tools. It is to show you that these are four different categories of tool that solve different parts of the same puzzle.

Notice that the "AI action plan for your keywords" row is the only feature GSCdaddy has that nobody else does. That is not an accident. That is the entire reason I built it.

The Real Question to Ask Yourself

Forget the tools for a minute and ask yourself three questions.

First, what is your monthly traffic? Under 5,000 visitors per month means you are still in the content creation phase. You need to publish more, not analyze more. Over 50,000 visitors means you have enough data in your own GSC that competitive research starts to matter less and your own data matters more.

Second, what is your budget? Indie bloggers often forget that tool subscriptions compound. $129 per month for Ahrefs is $1,548 per year. For a solo blogger making $500 per month from ads, that is three months of profit going to one tool. Ask whether the tool is earning its keep or eating it.

Third, what question are you actually trying to answer? Are you stuck because you do not know which keywords to target? Or are you stuck because you have the keywords but do not know what to do with the pages that are ranking? Those are completely different problems and they need completely different tools.

Most of the solo bloggers I know who subscribed to Ahrefs ended up canceling within 6 months. Not because Ahrefs is bad. Because they realized they were paying for a Ferrari to drive to the grocery store.

Where GSCdaddy Fits In

Let me give you a straight answer based on where you are today.

Solo Blogger With Under 50K Monthly Visitors

Focus on publishing, improve the pages that are already almost ranking, and reinvest the saved money into a freelance editor or a better hosting setup. Ahrefs or Semrush plus GSCdaddy. You need Ahrefs or Semrush for client reports and competitive research. Pick one, not both. Add GSCdaddy for each client project to handle the "what should we actually do this month" question without manually building prioritization spreadsheets.

In-House SEO at a Bigger Company

Full stack. Ahrefs for backlinks and keyword research, Semrush for site audits and PPC intelligence, GSC for ground truth, and GSCdaddy to prioritize action items across sites. At this scale the tools pay for themselves many times over because one missed optimization costs more than the entire stack.

Side-Project Builder Who Just Wants to Rank Their Own Product

GSC plus GSCdaddy. If you eventually need backlink data, pay for one month of Ahrefs, export what you need, and cancel. Do not sign up for the annual plan out of FOMO.

Closing Thought on SEO Tool FOMO

SEO tools are not a status symbol. Start with what you need, add tools when you feel actual pain, and cancel them the moment they stop earning their subscription. The best stack for you is the one that matches your current stage, not the one SEO Twitter says is mandatory.
